We were going by there anyway…

This air force motto brings to mind the thought of

surprise assistance!

It speaks of others, while on their journey, taking the time to lend a helping hand.  Most, if not all of us, have been blessed by unexpected help from others.  Their help comes in different ways, perhaps through encouragement, physical intervention, or prayer.

We are also helped by others in the realm of the unseen.  We are a body and as such, we are closely interrelated.  Our actions whether positive or negative affect the entire body.

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.i

One member, rising up in God to their heavenly calling,
brings the whole body heavenward.

Not only is our life not our own because we belong to Christ, but also because we cause victory or defeat for all.

If one member is defeated, the whole body suffers spiritually.  Satan knows the relatedness of the members of the body of Christ and seeks to isolate individuals to crush them.  He knows he affects not just one, but the whole.  That is why we are instructed to pray at all times for all the saints.

Always bearing about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our body.

For we who live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

So then death worketh in us, but life in you.ii

What we experience in this life, at times, goes beyond us personally.  The Holy Spirit may place a burden on us to bear on behalf of another.  What may seem to be your depression, grief, temptation and the like may be in part or in whole on behalf of another.

A friend shared a happening of this kind.  He found himself tempted toward pornography.  He had no history with such temptations, and yet here it was.  He continued to resist it for several days.  Shortly thereafter, he met with a man he had not seen in a long time.  As they were talking, the man confessed his struggle with pornography and his recent victory.  It was only then that my friend realized he had been resisting on behalf of another.

Thank God that we are not alone, we have one another.  Let us be faithful in prayer and intercession, following in the steps of our great High Priest.
